About The Department

Odia language and literature has an ancient history with its rich cultural heritage and uniqueness. Because of this trait it has attained the status of 6th classical language of India recently. The department of Odia is established in the year 1896. It has PG program with 16 seats and UG program with 32 Hons seats. The Department provides specialized teaching in Comparative Literature, Translation Studies, and Folk Literature & Tribal Studies. A good number of students from the department cleared UGC-JRF/NET and some of them got recruited in reputed governmental and non-governmental sectors. The department is planning to start several new courses and programs soon.

VISION

  • To preserve our ancient heritage, culture and science embodied in Odia literature.
  • To understand the potential of Indian knowledge system encoded in Odia literature.
  • Facilitate the deep understanding of ancient texts meeting the challenges of modern scientific discoveries and analysis.
  • To conduct various extension programmes to popularize the Odia language and literature.
  • To continue the old tradition with new approach by coordinating odia language with culture and literature.

MISSION

  • To emphasize and promote the language, literature and culture of Odisha.
  • To encourage and promote research in the field of undiscovered areas of literature as well as culture with comparative prospective.
  • To organize national seminar/workshop/ symposium and to enrich the departmental research and teaching.
  • To update and upgrade Odia teaching and research by ICT.
  • To undertake various minor and major research projects in interdisciplinary studies.
  • To develop E – Content.
