About The Department

Odia language and literature have a rich and glorious historical tradition. Owing to its distinct linguistic characteristics, rich literary heritage, and unique cultural legacy, Odia was accorded the status of the sixth classical language of India on 11 March 2014. In the field of study, research, preservation, and promotion of this illustrious language and its literary heritage, the Department of Odia has been continuously contributing as an important centre of academic excellence.

Established in 1896, the Department of Odia has a long and distinguished tradition of contributing to the study and promotion of Odia language, literature, and culture. At present, the Department offers 32 seats in the Postgraduate (PG) programme and 32 Honours seats in the Undergraduate (UG) programme. The Department places special emphasis on quality teaching, research-oriented learning, and the development of the creative and intellectual potential of its students.

The academic scope of the Department extends beyond the conventional study of Odia literature. It encompasses language, literature, folklore, tribal life and culture, and the distinctive cultural traditions of southern Odisha. A significant number of students from the Department have qualified in UGC-JRF/NET examinations and have pursued successful careers in higher education, research, and teaching. Many of them have also secured positions in reputed government and private institutions, bringing distinction and recognition to the Department.
